Default Fuel Pump or Filter or Something Else?

2006 5.4 85K miles, with what is turning out to be an intermitten problem.

one week ago after being shut off for appx 3 hours, it started and run like carbed engine that was flooding. it spit and sputtered around 300 RPMS, not wanting to take any gas. after restarting it 5 or 6 times, then all it would would just turn over with no hint of wanting to fire. Had it towed to the dealership - this was a Sunday - they jumped in it Monday morning and it fired right up and ran like a champ. They could find nothing wrong with it. So I accepted it as a flute...and it has been running great all week until now. It is doing it once again. I am going to try starting it tomorrow morning and see what it does. if it starts then what do you guys think the problem is. I hesitate to drive it anywhere now until this problem is solved. I am thinking the fuel pump or filter.

Your truck is notorious for a sticking fuel injector. Get them checked out before hydro locking the motor.

That would be the first thing I'd look at. It could have gotten wet then dried out by the time it got to the dealer. Someone did a good write up with pics on how to find/replace this about a year ago. I'd try to dig it up with search.

It started right up this morning. I just took it to the ford stealership and told them to check/replace the FPDM as you great guys suggested it as the possible problem. Since it was running, I thought about just trading it in on a new one, but after putting 1200 + for a tune up and replacing a coil pack, decided no to right now.

Hopefully addressing the FPDM will resolve the problem.

Thanks again guys.

Default Update

after a month and 1200 miles, it decided not to start again. Saturday, Same problem - started and ran great for a couple hours, and then I tried to start it and it spit and sputtered refusing to smooth out. then all it would do was just turn over and not fire at all. Got it the yesterday morning and it started right up. So I thought I was good to go for awhile. So I hooked up my trailer and went to home depot to buy some lumber. Loaded the trailer and guess what - yep - would not start.. Dropped the trailer, pushed it out from under the trailer and called wife to bring me her truck.
Went back to home depot this morning - thinking it would start and run as it has in the past. I decided was going to take it to the dealership this and leave it, letting them keep, and drive it until the problem duplicated for them. However things changed - it wouldn't start this morning either. First time I've ever been glad my vehicle WOULD NOT start. Called a wrecker to drag it to the dealership.. I just hope it still won't start when they get it.

Okay, the shop just called. Said they found the problem to be the "inertia swich" is bad and are replacing it. I hope this finally resolves the issue... Again only time will tell. Think I will trade it while it is running...
