Default Fuel Gauge not working

I posted this a little while ago but I have a huge update since then.

My fuel gauge would work about 50% percent of the time. It would go along the road just fine then all the sudden drop to E and stay there. After a short time it would come back and life was good again. This went on for about 10 months then one day it dropped and hasn't come back since. I've since replaced my fuel pump (a mother effer) and still no luck on the gauge.

My dad said something about replacing a connecter on the driver side of the truck and that it's a common issue. Anyone fixed this particular issue before or could elaborate?

You're dad may be refering to the connector that is along the frame rail under the drivers side door. There is a plastic cover that traps dirt that can cause a poor connection between the two connectors in this location.

This is definitely something that could be happening to me. My plastic cover is hanging and the wires are exposed. Probably why mine is never even on the gauge.

I checked that box with the connectors in it. In another post I read that the orange or yellow wire are the ones that operate the fuel gage. I couldn't find any issues with them so I'm concerned my problem is somewhere else in the wiring.

My guess then is the sender itself, located in the tank. I think there's a thread (or two) on this site that describes how to locate and disconnect a connector under the trucks bed by the gas tank, that you can short across to see if the gas gauge reads full with the key in the on position. If this test passes, it points at the tanks float sender as being suspect.

You're the first one to actually give me something to work with (other than Bucko.... he tried to help me out earlier). Thanks, dude! I'll have to take a look.

Bucko, do you know if there's a part number or anything that actually coincides with the plastic cover? For some reason everyone I talk to can't seem to figure it out.

Mine did the same thing, ended up being a broken wire right at the connector under the drivers door on a S/C. I believe it was green with red tracer, found a schematic on line but that was last year when it happened. The check engine light came on and it was saying the voltage to soleniod for evap no voltage, wire broken right at end of connector so seems that it may be an issue.

Okay, So I removed the instrument cluster looking for loose wires and there are no issues. I guess my next option is to take try and replace the pigtail at the fuel tank. I really didn't wanna drop the tank again but I guess I dont have an option
