Default Fuel Gauge on Empty

I have an '06 Lariat - currently at 263,000 miles - which I bought from my father about a year ago. The fuel gauge is a funny piece. When I fill the tank it falls to E until I use about 1/4 of the tank at which point it begins functioning as it should. He told me it started after he had the fuel pump replaced a few years ago. Since the gauge only reads E when it's full or empty, and I typically have a pretty good idea of which it would be, it's really not a big deal.

But, I wouldn't mind fixing it, just have no idea where to start. Let me know if you have a guess or have dealt with something like this.

Regards,

Jonas

I'm at 243K so my mileage is similar. Mine used to be slow to respond from time to time. I researched it and decided to try a couple bottles of Techron. I had quoted the repair and it's quite pricey. To my surprise the Techron solved the problem. I now use it about every 7500 miles. For more reference I still have the original fuel pump and sender. Best of luck to you.

Default Build up

So yours was a build up problem? I'll give the Techron a shot, but I'm fairly sure mine is a mechanical problem with the gauge in the tank.

I believe mine was a buildup issue. Yours may very well be mechanical but I wanted to give you the information for reference. It may be worth a shot.
