Default First timer!

Hey all! I'm a first timer here and definite newb. I enjoy reading some of these threads because I'm definitely in the ignoramus category.

I drive a 2005 f150 5.4L (bought it new in 2005 before going overseas), and it's been a great truck. Never abused, never modified. 100% stock save for stereo. 119k so far and doing fine.

I have been trying to educate myself on air intakes and exhaust systems for a long overdue upgrade for both systems. I wouldn't say money is an issue, but since I don't use the truck for work and don't abuse it, I plan on being buried in it and therefore don't mind putting some money into her! I'm leaning towards a K and N cold air intake and a Borla single side exit exhaust, as they seem to be the best mods for power and mpg improvement (and I don't have the loot for any lift or tires right now!).

I have read a million posts on borla vs magnaflow vs Gibson vs flow master etc. same with the cold air.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what they'd do if you were me? (Can of worms, opened. I know I know).

I'm all ears!

Thanks in advance!

Upon your reading and researching CAI systems you will find a mixed bag of results for either do this or don't. I have been in the same boat contemplating what to do here, but have backed out several times. There are really no performance gains from a CAI system. However, a con that I have noticed is that it could affect your MAF sensor when using a "wet" filter like a K&N. Again, this is a mixed bag and I don't have first hand knowledge. But I would do a little more searching on CAI within this forum before you make a final decision. I hope that this helps on the CAI part of your inquiry.

I am not certain about the exhaust. The options are many though. Good luck!

Thanks!

Actually, I used to use a drop in KN air filter and never had any issues. I accidentally damaged it once and never got another.

As far as exhaust goes, the selection is dizzying. It's hard to make heads or tails sometimes. I just try to do what I can to verify some of the performance claims manufacturers make. Borla is huge in the racing community so that speaks volumes, but I'm open minded. I know it's not going to mAke my truck into a gas sipper, but a slight improvement in that category, and/or noticeable improvement in power is what I'm after (along with low cabin noise and drone). Lots of claims out there so I like hearing from actual user experience here. I'm also curious what most think of dual vs single exhaust (forget looks--obv dual is better).

I haven't really, but I've heard some horror stories. Where do you recommend I start?

There are plenty of threads talking about programmers, just search around a little and see what's best for you.

Okay, well, perhaps a programmers 101? I have much to learn. I see some people seem to be all about the edge and a couple of other brands. I just don't know what the differences are between all these brands other than money of course.

SCT X4 with MPT custom tunes.. Best performance mod you can do without investing a ton of money.

One of the mods here can help you along with a tuner. Send a provate Message (PM) to Franci Motorsports for some help in this area. He's a sponsored Vendor of this site.
