Welp. After some calculations from last years repairs, plus the upcoming timing job and new tires needed this year, my maintenance calculations had me at enough $ for a truck payment. Sooooo, I solved my timing issue by selling. Actually, trading plus $$$. Got a '14 eco. Good luck to you all, I was actually looking forward to the timing job as I had done a TON of research on it. Maybe I'll run into a buddy with a 3V that needs it done at some point. OR I'll probably have to do this '14 at some point since they get a rattle as well, lol.

Not trying to be an *** here, but why would you buy a truck with the same (or potentially the same) problem? I have no idea what engines the 2014's have in them. I would hope that Ford learned from thier mistakes and fixed the rattle?
I'm still debating whether or not to fix my rattling 2004. Don't get me wrong, I've owned nothing but Ford's and it's been a great truck. It still runs OK - but at 170,000 miles, I'm stuck between putting the new phazer band-aids on it, or completely overhauling. I can definitely feel power loss at this point. Dunno if the phazers are causing it, or if the engine is just worn out. If there was a way to get around all the electronics, I'd stuff an old-school big-block engine in my rig. I love my '76 F150 fire-breathing 390! Gas mileage is terrible, but when you step on the gas pedal... it's hang onto your butt time!

Stanky,
I just put $3500 into my 2006 Lariat engine. Runs great now and has 187K
new chains, guides, tensioners, etc.
phasers and VCT's
oil pump, water pump, thermostat, fluid
dropped the pan
all OEM parts except the melling HV oil pump

My troubles began about your same mileage (185k) and I made it to 212,000 before having to redo everhthing mentioned by @Aeromech. But for around the same cost (Including a couple of my high $$ F-U's), mine is now is at 240k and runs smooth as silk, quiet as a mouse, strong as hell, and only requires one quart of oil add between 5000 mile oil changes. Oil pressure is great, gas mileage is OK, Hot idle oil pressure around 23-27, compression between 157 - 175 across all 8, and running original tranny, alternator and lots of other stuff.
I don't think yours is COMPLETELY WORN OUT.

Not trying to knock anyone for using these but figured I’d post this video regardless.

The $3500 was roughly $2500 to the shop plus another $1000 in parts I purchased and provided. I replaced parts other people wouldn’t have like the harmonic balancer and water pump. I purchased all OEM parts from various sources like Amazon,eBay, and online vendors. I even insisted on motor craft coolant. The only non OEM part I used was a Melling HV pump. Can’t remember the part number. So yes, labor was included in the $3500
