The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
#3451
Final update: 2006 F150 Lariat 5.4 3V
As noted above I purchased all original Ford parts except the Melling m340HV oil pump. I bought a Ford harmonic balancer, Motocraft anti freeze. Thermostat too. The shop found my right side (passenger) exhaust manifold cracked with a hole in it. That part along with some attaching hardware was $232 from the Ford dealer. They dumped my freon and had to reservice the a/c.
So, the truck was in the shop for 9 days. The shop charged me $2400 but that doesn't include the roughly $1000 in parts I purchased myself. Today I'm a happy man. The truck has never driven better and there's no more choo choo from the exhaust leak.

The shop manager suggested a new harmonic balancer when I showed him all the parts I had bought and asked if there was anything else. The truck is twelve years old and these pulleys have a rubber hub. Once, I had one slip on my Isuzu Trooper and when I did the timing belt it caused lots of problems because the TDC mark was wrong.

Late to the Party
So, I have been following this thread (not quite to its entirety), and I'm concerned that I let this go for too long. If I am already seeing oil pressure drops (just started last night--parked it) and experienced some mild shaking/rocking at highway speed, am I too late to go trough the repair process? I had a 5.4L Lincoln Navigator that showed symptoms at idle, but never at speed.

Help is my passenger phaser off?
Hey everyone this forum is great. It has given me the confidence to get this job done.... but I think I have a problem. I have attached a picture of my phasers are they in the correct position? The keyway on the crank is at 12 oclock. I have attached pictures. Should I move forward withthe chains or figure out what's wrong with ther placement of timing mark on the passenger side cam.

Need clarification. Have you 'just started' your timing job OR are you re-installing chains/phasers. If you just started - the marks on chains DO NOT align with timing marks on crank / phasers every revolution. In fact they align properly only once every 61 revolutions of the crankshaft - then the engine is on the opposite 'stroke' due to it being a four stroke. It takes 122 rev's of crank to align marks again on same stroke. /Least Common Multiple 21 crank teeth, 42 phaser teeth, 122 chain links/ ( BEWARE ). Try to get your pics fixed and we can be more help.

I don't know what is going on with that Phaser - But if the marked chain link is straddling the dot on the crank sprocket - it looks like the two colored links are not equidistant from the single marked link.
Definitely, the "R" is too far to the right - as can be seen by the cam lobes.

^^^^^^^' looking a little closer - perhaps if the crank 'keyway' is at 12:00 o'clock - perhaps the Phaser would move that far forward. Seems a lot for the 2 to 1 ratio, but I'll concede.
I prefer to have the crank dot at 6:00 o'clock instead of 7:00 o'clock.

agreed that it doesn't look right..... pretty sure the phaser is on correctly but now I'm thinking I need to buy a new bolt to be sure. .. if it is andvanced anyone know if i can put old tensioner and chains on to rotate till that cam lines up lock it down.... take that chain off and rotate the the rest to proper time again? Or is that too much to do with all the rollers in still.... I didn't pull rollers which i am trying not to do but now i run into this lol.
I'm thinking diagnosis is that phaser has advanced because the retention pin was not attached and fell out when old phaser came off.. can anyone confirm?

Then if you need further verification, you can 'count chain links'. 30 Links from (but not including the colored link straddling crank dot) up to (but NOT including or straddling) the Cam timing mark --- BOTH ways, on BOTH sides. Then it's correct.
