Default F150 fuel gauge

To start off, Im new here. 2004 F150 XL with nearly 300k on the OEM engine with out a rebuild. 3rd trans though lol.

Went and upgraded to 07 FX4 gauges. Everything works except the fuel gauge. Figured it was the bad unit, sent it back and got another. Having the SAME issue.

Put the key in, start the truck with full tank of fuel, Takes about 20 seconds or so for the fuel gauge to move, and when it does, it shoots up to a full tank. Great! Then i start to have issues. Itll drop to half tank within a few miles. Then full tank. Empty. Goes to where ever when it wants, All with a full tank.

I have a florida truck, so its not rusted to ****. NEW OEM fuel pump with fuel sending unit. Any ideas what it can be? Turn the truck on with reset button held to sweep the gauges. Everything sweeps just fine. Ideas?

04 f150 xl model with 4.6 to a 07/08 fx4 gauge cluster.

Did your old gauge work after replacing pump and sending unit? Or did you replace everything all at once?

Old gauges worked. Put new ones in, it stoped working accuratly. Replaced fuel pump because it had nearly 300k miles on it anyway, no change. Old gauges back in it works fine.

Another factor is this is my SECOND fx4 set in the truck doing the same thing. Do the fx4 of 2007 and xl of 2004 use the same electrical pin out on the gauge cluster?
