Default extremely frustrated

Just bought an 05 s-crew lariat 4x4 last sat.....ran great for test drive, ect. This a.m. when I got to work, I noticed a low ticking sound. Shuddered after reading nothing but bad about these engines AFTER I buy one.....now this thing sounds like a diesel engine running almost. I hear it the clearest from underneath, is this typical for these cam phasers when they cause trouble? No issues on power driving or oil pressure, just the noise. How much am I looking at to get cam phasers replaced if that's it? Hope it's not something else inside as I STUPIDLY bought this thing as-is. My "new" truck is NOT making a good early impression on me. Will go back to chevy if this keeps up. I've already seen these motors are horrifically expensive to replace.....am so screwed if gotta go that route.

Could also be your injectors making noise. If your truck is running well, then I wouldn't worry about it.

This thing almost sounds like a diesel! can hear the tick, not excessively loud, but speeds up as the engine revs up, then back down accordingly.....but sounding like a deisel while running? WTH is THAT? Yes, power-wise for now seems normal, oil pressure(via the gauge) is good.....this thing ran good during test drive! less than a week ago! I haven't changed a THING! Bought it at a toyota dealer, they, Im sure did the oil change before putting it out for sale, could the wrong oil filter(not motorcraft) have anything to do w it? the sticker says they used the 5w20 like the book calls for.....

Ticking in "most" cases is valve train . Knocking is almost always rod or main bearing . An old trick to try and isolate the noise is to use a stethascope made for this, usually you can pick one up at harbor freight cheap. But sounding like a diesel? Sounds more like knocking than ticking. Alternator , A.C. , power steering pump , manifold exhaust leak etc. can also make noise. isolate the noise first and then go from there.

Hey man, it might be the injectors. I can hear mine at low rpms but very faintly. And only if the radio is off and the windows are up. I thought the same as I have only owned my 06 for a year now. And thought the worse. But if they are no low oil pressure warnings or anything else going bad, u might just be hearing the injectors. It's weird that owners can hear the injectors on these trucks, that faint ticking noise is a pain.

These motors have noisy lifters to start with, most likely you got a blown exhaust manifold, they are notorious for that and are failry pricey to fix due to labor. The parts are under 200 bucks but you got a min. of 8 hrs in it

Doesn't sound like phasers. That sound should go away after 1200+ RPMs. Could be exhaust leak, injectors, lash adjusters or other timing components. Get a stethoscope and see if you can isolate where the noise is coming from. Does it have a Fram filter on it? Hope not.

My 04 has been drinking it for almost 50k miles. Nothing to fret over. My mechanics says it would be worth it to change phasers cause it would eventually start again.. it's nothing to sell the truck over

Exhaust Leak. Check your manifold.
