I’m new to the truck world and am trying to understand my setup. I bought a 4.6L ’08 XLT (maybe STX… I’m still not sure) a few weeks ago and the previous owner definitely put some love and personality into the truck. I bought it because it’s low mileage and runs great, but a number of things just aren’t my style… so I’ve been in the process of making my own changes to have it better suit me.
That said, I’m looking to modify the exhaust system a bit. I’ve attached a photo of what it looks like currently… and it’s just too loud (for my taste). I’d like to bring it back to something closer to the quieter stock setup, but I have no idea what stock looked like. I also don’t know much (really anything) about exhaust systems so I was hoping for a little education here.
From the looks of it, it seems like I have 2 separate channels all the way through? 2 Catalytic converters ——> 2 straight-thru mufflers ——> out.
Did the stock set up go from 2 catalytic converters ——> 1 chambered muffler ——> out?
The dreaded glass pack. The previous owner had a true dual exhaust put on. The stock exhaust had a dual in single out muffler.
I recommend looking at a dual in dual out Magnaflow. They are louder than an OEM but will be quieter than the glass packs.
It will also be considerably cheaper than going back to a single in dual out.

Thank you for your help! Not pushing back, but just looking for education... Why would a dual in dual out be considerably cheaper than dual in single out?
Less fabrication. A dual in dual out is likely to match up to the current pipe spacing and they will not have to remove
the extra pipe or fabricate a Y adapter for single out.

For most light trucks, we typically recommend using one of our 5x8x18" units to get a little more sound, but still maintain a comfortable cabin for daily driving. We offer this size in a number of different inlet/outlet styles, finishes and piping diameters, which can be found below on our website. We have a dual in-dual out if you wanted to keep the current dual setup or a dual in-single out to convert back to the stock style single-exit.
We would recommend double-checking the measurements of any universal muffler in the intended location on your stock exhaust system prior to purchasing to ensure compatibility. If there are any other questions regarding mufflers that we can answer, please let us know!
