Exhaust Manifold Leak

I just got my '08 5.4L back from a regular service at my local ford dealership. They have just quoted me $1050+tax to replace the broken right exhaust manifold (plus any additional cost of replacing broken studs). Called into a local auto repair place and they've estimated $650-700 for the same job. Apparently the labour estimate for the right manifold is twice that of the left on the 4x4 models (I'm guessing because of all the bits that have to be removed to get to it). Right now I don't have the tools or the space to do this myself unfortunately. So. I'll have to pay to get this done. Risk of not doing it at all is that the leaking fumes find their way into the cab through the air vents that are sucking in air from the engine compartment. As much as I hate whining about how much my truck costs me, I seem to do it more and more as it gets older (or as I get older) :-(

I'm confused now... is your truck a 5.4L? What year? I can not even see, let alone touch, all of the studs on my manifold. As I said before... the frame rail and the strut tower are in the way. I don't know if it's possible to get a socket on all the studs. I have actually heard of this issue before from others where the motor and transmission actually needed to jacked up 3" or so to gain access to manifold.

Yes, my truck is a 5.4. It is an 05. I didn't even drop starter. As I said before.. I jacked motor up as high as I could on each side, then jacked it a little more. I changed both manifolds and all studs and nuts. Passanger side was toughest to reach all studs, but they all came out. I'm giving you honest advice, if ya don't feel comfortable doing it then I would take it to a shop.
Your experience seems to be the exception. I'm very confident in my wrenching skills but I will honestly say doing the passenger manifold on my 05 was the most difficult thing I've ever done on any of my trucks. Perhaps because none of your studs needed to be extracted helped immensely but that is usually not the case, I had to extract three broken studs. Also, your arms and hands must be tiny because there was no possible way that I could have done that swap without removing the starter. Come to think of it, even with the engine raised up there was no way the manifold was going been come out of the engine compartment with the starter in place.
There is a reason why shops around here charge almost $1000 to do this job, it's not easy.

Just had my passenger side done 2 weeks ago...cost me $1300 bucks at the stealership and I bought the manifold from RockAuto. The original quote was around $600. They ended up having to pull the motor out because one of the studs broke off recessed into the head and they couldn't get it out. I even went to the shop and looked at myself. Needless to say, I was not happy. But, it's fixed now and my truck runs great again.
