Engine Swap- Is it worth it?
#11
Well, I just did what your thinking about doing. Bought an 04 with a bad motor. At first thought about putting in a reman engine. Now tearing into motor to diagnose what's wrong with it. With 104k if I can get it running doing the adjusters, followers, and timing chain etc. Hoping to have a damp good truck with little $$$ money.
My thoughts on a used motor, will the phasers, timing chain etc. need to be done?

Well I had that same thought. I don't think my issue is cam phasers. I talked to a tech at our local ford dealer. He said you will be able to hear the phasers if they are bad. The truck sounded normal. The yard I'm buying it from said the issue is power loss. Runs and drives good then no power but the motor does not die. Still idles just no acceleration. Doesn't sound like phasers to me. But any ideas on what the issue is? Also no check engine light. ABS light is on but I'm sure it is unrelated. The only difference I noticed between the 05 4x4 5.4 and my 06 4x4 5.4 is the 2005 seeemed to shake a little more (the whole truck/ engine).

One more thing, the shake is not very noticeable. I just was looking for anything wrong. Price of the truck is $3800. Only other thing I noticed was I revved it in neutral up to like 3000 RPM and let off the accelerator. Lights dimmed a little like alternator wasn't quite keeping up. The truck has been sitting since this summer in snow unfortunately. When I had it running and very little moving I experienced no power loss issues.
