Default Edge Programmer/X-Cal2???

Between the Edge and the X-Cal2 programmers, which one is best for an 06' 4.6 liter V8? Also, doesn't the edge come with the screen that can mount in the truck? I have heard they are very easy to read and install, is that correct as well? Oh, and which ever one I should go with, are there different brands...I have heard of the Edge Evolution, is that the only one, or main one to go with? And vice versa on the X-Cal.

I would do some research on Edge vs the competion. I have a Edge,so I'm biased. You only have 3 "canned" tunes with Edge plus whatever you modify.Edge comes with a pod for the F-150,so it looks good.
The x-cal2 & the newer unit from MSD can have "custom" tunes installed
from tuners such as Troyer Performance(good folks). I have not seen a pod for the x-cal2 or the other MSD unit.

I also like the gauge functions on Edge device. There has been a big price increase on Edge,so the X-cal2 plus custom tunes may be the price advantage.

I hear what you are saying and have done some research already. Most people who have our trucks think the edge is the way to go, but I have not heard anything about performance of the edge, just mainly the pod that it comes with and how it looks cool and has cool features...which I don't know what they are. I was wondering what you thought performance wise about the edge and did it really make that big of a difference in your truck? What setting do you use it on and what gas do you use? Also with the pod, is it easy to use as well and is it easy to take off in case I have to go back to the dealership? Thanks for the advice.

there is another thread somewhere on here if you search for EDGE Evolution....but heres the deal...ive heard good and bad from both....ive heard edge is good, BUT they will KILL ur tranny, and ive heard that Xcal 2 is good but that neither backs their product.....xcal makes 1 called the "Live Wire" which is their version of the edge....look into that, also you can look into superchips which is a good brand, and Diablo Sport...

I'd definitely recommend the Xcal II & Troyer custom tunes over the Edge & canned tunes, especially when we're talking the same exact price. Give my post (#9) and that thread a read, hopefully it helps you out.

Thanks, that explained just about everything I needed to know and more. I think I have made up my ming to go with the x-cal ii. I do have one question though, who makes the livewire? I was under the impression that it was a sub product of the x-cal. Well I am looking forward to some added performance to my truck, I already have a K&N cold air and exhaust put on so hopefully this will just add some more power.

The Livewire is made by SCT, but it can be customed tuned by Troyer or any custom tuner of your preference. If you read that last thread then you know my recommendation.

SCT is the compant that produces the Xcal & Livewire among other things.

Hi guys, Im new......

I would go for the SCT shtuff....My bird is SCT tuned running a Lightning MAF and the car runs flawlessly, even on 87 octane. For my lariat, a true real time diagnostic display would be great. The Edge, DashHawk, and AeroforceTech gauge all give great readings. But I have the best of both worlds, that being a comprable tuner and true diagnostic that gives real time data logging type numbers, I dont think the Livewire can be beat.

But, above all else, you have to think about the tuning. Its much more than adjusting the spark and fuel tables. Accurate and true transmission tuning is where the magic is. The precanned tunes from the competitors, a lot of times do nothing more than increase the line pressure along the full spectrum of the transmission functionality. This is a lot to think about, since a reliable transmission is important. I trust the background of SCT tuning alot more than anyone else. Im very familiar with the trans tuning expertise of the founder of SCT, since Ive been running his programming in my 'Bird since 2000. Having a software engineer who is knowledgeable in full powertrain programming is important...especially if that guy tuned the Roush 360R and ran chief design for the Mercury Marauder

I say spend a few more dollars and get the Livewire even if the mounting setup is kinda ghey.
