Default Edge Evolution question.

I have a friend who recently bought a used 2004 F150 (non-heritage) that came equipped with an Edge Evolution tuner. The tuner will sometimes stay on when the truck is off, it will sometimes come on when the truck is started, and the screen will often remain unlit while the truck is running. I downloaded the user manual, and tried unplugging and plugging in the OBDII port connector. The tuner will not read the the trucks hex file. I was able to ascertain that the truck is currently in the number 1 (transmission only) tune by looking at the little black box in the top right corner of the screen (when the screen will stay lit). I know this sounds kinda hard to understand, lol, but this thing has been acting really funky. Before I call Edge, I'd just like to know if anyone has ever experienced similar problems. Thanks guys.

BTW, I'm an experienced tuner, but I've only ever worked with SCT and Diablosport, so I'm kinda lost here.

The Edge has to read the truck's HEX file to program it in the first place. What makes you think it isn't? If you call Edge, they will tell you to update the firmware, which might help. I would try programming it to stock (level 0) and then back just to verify that its working correctly. Maybe its not unlocked from a previous owner? Hmm.

Mine reads the hex file, but sometimes just shows a blank, back-lit screen that will not turn off when the truck turns off. I couldn't figure mine out. I had to unplug it to get it to work right. I left the programs (level 2) on the truck and just unplugged it and put it inside my console for the time being. I have contacted Edge (very friendly staff, BTW) and they say to update it. I did the update and it didn't change it. Edge wants 100 bucks to work on it, and I just couldn't see paying that so I unlugged it and just use it as a hand held programmer

I would love to have the displays back, but I cannot stand the screen going blank and staying on . Sometimes it will not turn on at all, I have to unplug it and plug back in to correct the situation (I was having to unplug/plug back in on a daily basis)

Makes sense. But what mine does is sometimes you go to start the truck, and teh screen comes on but it's blank. Turn the truck off, and the screen contimues to be lit and blank. This situation does not afffect the programming one bit, but I would love to have the displays it offers back. I did the update, but that did not help it. Unpluggin it and plugging it back in seems to work till the next time it sits overnight, then it happens again. I think I am going to try the updates again to see if that will work I bought mine brand new from a distributor in Florida, so mine was in unused condition. I have complained of this before on here, but I am going to assume that everyone elses works great except mine and the OP's Edge.

Mine does ^^ this occasionally too, usually when its really cold out when I'm starting the truck. I just unplug and reconnect the plug from the OBDII port, and the Edge comes back to fine. From what I gather (from personal observation and reading other posts) the stock battery has an ok amount of CCA, but in really cold weather or if your battery is starting to go, it doesn't have enough power to turn over your engine AND power on the Edge correctly. You might not have any other symptoms of a weak battery yet, but I bet if you get a new battery you will find that your Edge no longer does this.

I should have been more specific. When I start the truck, the hex file will sometimes show up on screen, but when I attempt to tune the truck (turning the key to the on position without cranking), the hex file does not show up on screen. I don't think it is locked on a previous truck, because the screen (when working) shows that the truck is currently tuned to level 1, and the tuner came with the truck when he bought it. At this point, all he really wants to do is return the truck's tune to stock and remove the unit from the truck.

I really appreciate the help guys. I won't be able to look at the truck again until Wednesday (the next day me and the owner are both off of work), but I'm thinking that the information you guys have provided me with may help immensely.

Finally, yes. Thank you good sir, that may very well be. I noticed that the battery is the original Motorcraft battery from 2001, and the other morning when it's about 20F when I got off of work saturday morning, it cranks a bit slow. Also, when it's cold outside, that's when the Edge does seem to act up. I do exactly what you do, unlug and plug back in, acknowledge the hex file screen and back to normal it goes. Thanks

I'll check into another battery soon. Again, thanks.

Justin

This may help a bit, when I go from the stock settings (as when I first got the Edge), it shows the hex file number. When it's been installed on the truck for a bit, when I go from say....Level 2 to Level 3, it doesn't show it. The only time it shows the hex file number seems to be when it malfunctions (when it's cold it seems like Keeblerz28 stated) and when I go from stock to any other level of programming. Hope this helps

Justin

Justin - you may already know this, but there is a good possibility that you will dump your PCM (which may require a dealer reflash and a $100 charge from Edge) if you try to program with a weak battery or even a strong battery in extreme cold. Not lecturing, just making sure you (and others reading) know.
