You're going to be pissed when you find that bit laying in the driveway next month.

Do you think you might have dropped it inside the vct valve body??? Did you lose the bit after the solenoid was installed?

Possibly caught between the front cover and timing chain? Not sue if it could get there but I would think where the chain comes through the head or cover possibly. This makes me sick to my stomach, I dropped a carb nut down a 383 stroker when I was 16 on a buddy's camaro when we were in high school. Had to pull the intake and found down in the head intake runner, would have been a bent vavle on first stroke of the key. Lesson learned and never forgot, cover all holes and make sure sockets fit properly.

Good luck brother!

With the plastic you said you found in the pan, it sounds as if your chain guides may be shot and the VCT work you did may not solve the problem. It looks as if you should probably remove the timing cover and inspect the chains, guides and tentioner. In the process you should end up finding the socket as well.

You might have dropped outside the motor. There's all kinds of nook and crannies for it to get stuck on. I'm sure you did already but get a bright flashlight and systematically look thoroughly over the motor. Good luck!

Thank you for all the great advice. My roommate found a socket that looks just like the one dropped in the drive way, I have a few of them so its a tough decision but I have nearly taken the whole engine apart this week and no luck so its all going back together. I'm pretty sure I know whats going to happen when I turn the key....
