My buddy recently got a 2004 FX4, and it is very similar to mine except it is a 4.6 liter, while mine is a 5.4. I THINK, but am not sure, that I read somewheres along the way that the FX4s only come with a 5.4 motor. Also, his interior has the floor shifter to go into 4x4, which is more what the XLT has versus the FX4, but I figured maybe it was because he has the 4.6. His truck does have an FX4 sticker on the side of the box, but I'm starting to think the dealer just stuck it on.... What do you guys think?

Doesn't specifiy a year, though you posted in 04-08. My 03' FX4 has the 5.4 and floor 4x4 shifter. There is other FX4's with the 4.6.

For 04-08, they came with 4.6 OR 5.4. I believe if you run a VIN # check, it will tell you if it is a legit FX4.

When did he buy it? Did he buy it used? Someone probably custom ordered it from factory with 4.6 and floor 4x4 shifter..

 

AZ, it is a 2004. He bought it used from a dealer in Southern Maine. I think you are correct in saying that that previous guy must have ordered it like that, but it still doesn't explain that his interior is not the same as mine and ours are the same year, I just have the 5.4. He has an XLT interior (forgot to add that on to my earlier post). Seemed kind of fishy to me. I mean, the dealer could have easily slapped on that FX4 sticker. could run the vin to make sure, but it's not that important I was j/w.

 

I just got my FX4 a few months ago. Mine has the full center console with switch 4x4. I did however, look at several different trucks. I have seen FX4's with floor shifters, 60/40 front seats, and the 4.6L motor. The only thing I found specific to the FX4 (my experience only!) is they all have painted front and rear bumpers to match truck (as does the STX') but FX4's have power windows/locks, and rear power windows. If his bumpers are painted and it's got power inside then I bet it's an FX4

 

FX4 is more of an off-road package more than anything. Really the only difference is that they will have a skid-plate, the color matched bumpers and also I think the bigger wheels, but I'm not sure on that last one.

 

That's correct, sh!tty skid plates at that..

 

The vin and door tag will say what model it is, just take a look and have the dealer run the vin.

 

The gauge cluster should have the FX4 logo in the center, FX4 specific wheels, painted bumpers, FX4 specific grille as well.

 

I had an 02 fx4 and it had the split bench seat. One thing that came standard on the 04 and up was the captain chairs and middle console that I wasn't too crazy about. I do believe that it is standard on all fx4. Bought it in 04 so my memory may be off but i'm pretty sure.

ps. i was also looking at a fx4 with the 4.6 at the time. So they do come in both engines.

 

My 05 fx4 has the 60/40 with column shift so no they dont come standard with captains chairs. Thank god cause they suck!
