Default A different oil change thread

I have searched online and have not found an answer to my question.
I drive @ 6000 miles a year. I end up changing oil 3 times a year because of time versus mileage. Dino oil (motor craft semi syn. too) seems to "smell" used after 3 to 4 months. I travel only far enough for the temp needle to hit the center of the temp gauge. Tossing about the idea of changing my oil with full synthetic and a new filter, and changing the filter and adding the necessary oil after 6 months. Anyone heard of low mileage oil changes with synthetic? What do you low mileage guys/gals do?

I drive my cobra maybe 1000 miles per year. I change the oil once a year with Mobil 1 full synthetic in the spring before I begin driving it again. I have heard of other guys that like to change it once in the fall/winter before putting the car away for storage and once in the spring when it comes out. With full synthetic you should be ok going a full year between changes if you wanted.

Thanks. I just have no experience with full synthetics. Going from dino to full synthetic and not changing for a year doesn't make sense, even though it works for you. I could see changing filters and a quart of synthetic oil 6 months into a complete change. For the price, it would be cost effective compared to changing dino/semi sun. 3x a year. Thanks, and Amsoil is a individual dealer only?

I would never go a whole year between oil changes. Just sounds like a bad idea imo

My boat has a Corvette motor. The owners manual says change every 50hr. I put 50hr a year so one oil chage a year. No problems...

I run 6qts 5w30 Mag1 full synthetic and 1qt Lucas Full Synthetic additive (i know some of you hate it, but it never causes me a problem) with a MC filter. I do lots of stop and go trips that the motor does not get to full operating temp so I change once in the spring and once in the fall. As a matter of fact, I just got my oil and filter from Amazon this week. I have it set up on auto ship so I never have to remember anything. Just do it when it shows up. I will say at the end of the cycle, my 5.4 starts to sound a little more like a diesel I like but my oil test came back good to go so I switched from 3 changes per year to 2 changes per year about 3 years back. Never have any oil loss or prolems.

As you said, when doing a once a year or extended mileage based oil change, you would change the oil filter out periodically and top off. During this time, you can also send oil samples to Blackstone oil analysis labs and they will tell you if your oil is still good to use. There's nothing to worry about going from synthetic blends to full synthetics. Oil technology has grown leaps and bounds with engine technology and tighter clearances, conventional 3K mileage intervals are long gone. Full synthetic oil change is more money initially but saves you money in the long run because you're not dumping it out every 3 months/3K miles. When you sign up with Amsoil, an independent dealer will contact you and answer any questions that you may have. You can purchase products direct through your dealer or online and be at your door within several days or local pickup if you live near one of their warehouses. If you need any additional information about oil, look up bob is the oil guy. There's a plethora of oil information out there, just a little research and homework is all it takes. Good luck to you!

Rubbin
What is Mag 1? Mobil 1?
What are you paying at Amazon?
I know Wally world has Mobil 1 5qt bottle for $26.
Is there a shelf life on Synthetic?
Thanks
