Default In desperate need of help.

Good evening everyone. As the title says I am lost, in dark and need help and advice. I posted an issue before but now the situation has gotten better then much worse. I bought a 2006 Ford F150 XL 5.4L with 210000KM. I knew it had a manifold stud issue on one side. And some other little items.

This past Friday I got the truck back from a local mechanic. He fixed the stud and a bearing and a few small things including the passenger side Camshaft position sensor. There was damage and he replaced the sensor and connecting wire.

Now to the bad. It is certified and on the road legally, YAY. But I am having the worst driving experience. There is a check engine light and my buddy hooked up his sensor and he got 3 error codes. All related to the drivers side. He said one was an intermittent sensor alarm. And something about camshift position over retarded. I think they were P0020, P0021 and P0022.

When I got it back, I cleaned the throttle body, the MAF and ran a can of Sea Foam cleaner threw it. Now when I start it cold as possible, it stutters, stalls and if I try to drive it just grumbles and wont go anywhere. If the engine is hot, I can drive it no problem. Small hesitation on acceleration from dead stop but very minimal.

I have read thousands of threads about replacing phasers. My buddy said these codes are related to the phaser. But I have my doubts. He is a mechanic, but not for ford. I have heard lots of talk about phaser jobs being upwards of 1500 dollars. But I have also read this issue may be as simple as working on the VCT solenoid.

I am so lost. I would hate to pay someone to replace my phasers just to have this issue remain. I am dead against going to a Ford Stealership. But want to have as much info as possible before I approach a mechanic.

Please help, any info is more than I have now.

Do a quick check on the fuel pump drive module. I just had my cam phasers and timing kit done and it cost me 2100. I also had codes that were the same as yours. I believe mine started as a tensioner gone bad and then a timing chain guide shattered because of it. My phasers actually looked good but i had the mechanic change everything anyway. One thing he said before he started on it was that if the noise is from the back of the engine that would probably indicate that the cam shaft bearings are done and that would mean there's metal throughout the engine. I don't know if that's true but thats what he told me. Hopefully this helps.

It helps a great deal. I had one on order, but upon checking found the existing is the new version with the spacer bushings and is in fair shape. Sp I actually cancelled my order. Outside of this, the symptoms of this module acting up would/should be apparent in all cases at all speeds. But cruising at 60-110KM/H the truck runs like a dream. Good read though.
