Default Cv axle

When I was putting my new tires on I noticed grease in my wheel well. That wasn't there when I did my brakes a month ago. There is a tear on the seam of the boot. Is there a way I can get a new boot or just seal it up or do I have to get a whole new cv axle?

I believe you can get replacement boots, check wherever you buy your parts

Its much easier to replace the whole axle...I just had the same problem a month ago, after failed attempts to patch the tear( it was small) I just bought a new axle for $70 and swapped it out...simple job

Its not the cost, its the labor. In order to replace the boot you must remove the whole axle, then try to pry the old boot off, and then stretch the new boot on... While you could simply have a whole new boot on a whole new axle and half as much labor

You will need a 12-point 12mm socket to get inner axle flange bolts off the front differential. A strong impact wrench is pretty much a must as those are torque down and have Loc-Tite on them. Be sure to use Loc-Tite when you reinstall. If you need the steps to get you to the point where all you need to do is zip off the inner axle flange bolts, look for my thread "Lower Ball Joint Replacement" and it has all the steps with pics.

After you remove the axle do a very thorough visual inspection and then decide whether or not to replace the entire axle or just the boot. $70 is a damn good price for an axle.

I got a reman axle at napa. It believe it ran me like $60 for the axle. It had like a $110 core charge, but i got all of it back when I gave em my old axle. Their warranty is good on them too. I have ripped 7 boots over the last 2 years. I got one fixed, and the labor cost sucked nuts. I started replacing the axle myself for the next 6. So, I have gotten 5 axles for free under their warranty. .... The axles are fine, my truck and my driving have issues.
