Default Chip Key

I hope this is not the wrong place to post this, but I only had one key for my 2004 F150 and have been meaning to go to the Ford dealer in the next town and have a couple made. In the meantime we are on the Outer Banks at Avon,NC and I noticed at the Ace Hardware they had the chip keys and said they could program them there while I waited. Guaranteed. $69.They put my original key in the reader and got the code and then put the new key in and it programmed the new key. It worked just as the original without having to go to the dealer and without having to hook anything up to the OBD port. I had keys made for our Five Hundred a couple of years ago and had to go to the dealer and the guy hooked a laptop to our car's port under the dash and it took about 30 minutes, and he still had problems. I hope this helps anyone that maybe needs an extra key without having to go through the dealer.
Jim

Very cool. Must be a regional thing though b/c I just called my local ACE and they can't do it.

Unfortunately, since it is a clone you can not use it to program new keys on your own. At least you have two keys now.

That's cool! I've heard that some locksmiths can do the same thing.

I was wondering about that. Here in Denver the local ACE is charging 80 bucks. I also have only one key from when I bought the truck. Looks as if I will be dropping into ACE this afternoon.

Delayed reply - but if you're in the Denver area then it'll only cost $80 to do it at Sill Terhar Ford in Broomfield. This way you get a real key that you can use to program others instead of a clone.

Thanks I'm going to try to find a place tomorrow. Hopefully my local ACE will do it.

its only $7 more dollars at a dealer here in kc and you can pay another $20 or so for a 3rd key and never have to pay the high dollar cost again as long as you have 2 keys

..dealer here (AL) charges $70 for the second key. Then get some "blanks" off ebay and make yourself a couple spares.
