Changing plugs early

Default Changing plugs early

My '06 has 63k miles,just wondering if it's wise to change the plugs early and hope for the best.

What kind of motor do you have? If the answer is a 5.4L 3V...then hell yes. Change em now. Don't wait until 100K.

110% agree.

For a 3V yer chances for success ( as measured in no breakage) goes up the sooner you do this.

Ford changed the R&R interval to 60K anyway. Plus more often than not the plugs are shot - unacceptable gap growth almost assured for one or more of them.

When looking at mine at 98K in my 06 then yes for sure do them. They were way worn out. Change them now!!!

My 04 had 98k on them an I would guess that just by holding them up to the new plugs, my gaps had grown by double. my MPGs went up about 1mpg in town and nearly 2 on the hwy after about 5 tanks now.

I struggled with a misfire after the change and went back to find I didnt have the plug tight and skipped the dielectric grease on that boot. Must have been the plug i opened that 5th-ish beer on.

Yes it's a 5.4. How do I know if it's a 3V?.


I just bought this truck over the summer,the guy I bought it from said he changed them at 50K(didn't have any documentation though).If I take them out and they look new I guess I'll put them back in.

2006? Yours is a 3V. 3V's were used in 2004-2010 5.4 F150's.

Late 2008 & up had revised heads & plugs without the breakage issue.

If you take them out - post a pic and/or tell us what the plug brand and number is. The most current plug is a Motorcraft SP-515 and that is what you want in there.

Also - at 50K they are only ~10K shy of needing to be changed again - so if yer going through the trouble may as well do so.

So if the plugs were changed within the past few years will they be the"one piece" design or do they still make the ones that came factory?

They are still a 2 piece design. Only 1 piece plug out there is the Champion plug. But if you put antisieze on them they will come out fine.
