Default changing oil intervals

i read somewhere that if you use synthetic, its every 5,000 miles instead of 3,000 miles. is this true?

at 3,000 miles on my truck, i change the oil to Mobil 1 and now it is at 6,300.

I'm using the Royal Purple and supposedly it's good for 12K-15K miles. I plan on changing the filter every 3K-4K until the oil starts to look dark, but still less than the 15K...then change it out.

I am willing to bet this is probably the most popular subject ever to be discussed on any vehicle forum. I was on a Toyota and Jeep forum and this was by far the most popular subject; oil. Each thread had a different answer. Synthetic (Mobil 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple), dino, synthetic blend (this is the only one I have heard to definitely stay away from), 3K, 5K,...
My opinion, which is worth squat, change the oil every 5k in a vehicle that is newer than 2004. I use Mobil 1. Auto Zone just had a special 5 qts and a filter for $23. With the 5.4L you can get out the door for about $35. Not too bad. I have heard only good things about Amsoil and Royal Purple, but I am just not willing to drop the money for them, yet.
With an answer like that I should be a politician. No substance.

I stick with ford oil and change every 3k. Only way I have been told is to have your oil tested, but depends on conditions too. Use your best judgement. We have company trucks that the boss drives and have over 150k miles and he only changes his like every 5-8. Last truck we got rid of was a '99 ford with the 4.2L and it was running like a champ and used basicly no oil. Just time for a newer truck.

Every 3k for Dino oil and every 5 k for Synthetic. I also use a BG product called MOA. GREAT stuff.

I use what is recommended in the manual for the 3v 5.4 and I change it every 5k. I have a local Lube Center do it for $45 for the 7qts all the other fluids and their warranty. I can't do it for that cheap.

Yeah I think for the synthetic 5k is good. I had maybe 20 bucks in my last oil change, motocraft oil and filter.

You can extend the oilchange intervals to 5,000 miles regardless of whether you use mineral oil or synthetic.
Im personally not a believer in running oil any longer than 5,000 miles. You could have the best filter there is and its still not going to filter out the carbon and other microscopic particles.

As cheap as it is, I change it every 3000. Done all my vehicles this way and never had a lubrication problem / failure. I use a sinple Fram filter and castrol 20w-50. 2000 F150 V6. 120000 miles and no problems yet... Knock on wood
