Default Can you help??

Hi Guys,

I am new here, but have visited and found this site extremely helpful when doing things on my truck...so thanks for all the great threads and posts!!

So I have an 06 F150 5.4L...It has 75,000 miles on it and has been a great truck for me. Something has just started making a noise and I am not sure what it is. It only happens when I take off from a stop...I think about the second to third shift in...it's almost like the noise anti lock brakes make when it doesn't want to stop. But..it doesn't happen everytime I take off from a stop....only sometimes. It sounds like it's coming from underneath the truck back of the cab. It's a strange noise...but I think we all know what antilock brakes sound like when they are trying to work...that grinding/humming noise or something. If you guys have ANY ideas...I'd appreciate it!!

Thanks!!

Is it for positive the anti-lock brake sound or is it a clunk, You might want to have the tranny checked either way but if it's a sure clunk you will want to have it checked out.

Thanks guys....no, it is not a clunk. I had it at the dealership last week and they said that everything checked out fine and they could not hear it. I told them that it was an intermittent noise and that it doesn't happen all the time. it seems to only happen when I am accelerating slowly ...when I power through after leaving a stop it doesn't seem to do it at all .

Or when you pull out of the dealers lot, it makes the noise, ofcourse.

Look into the rear diff clutch discs for a limited slip differential! Thats what it sounds like but it normally does it in turns a little skipping you could say!

Thanks strawsb...what does that all involve if you don't mind me asking? Are you saying it is a problem with the rear differential? And do you mean the discs are going bad? If you could elaborate on that a little...that'd be great!! I can't thank you guys enough for your thoughts!!

Well you need to pull the whole rear did apart and it's basically the discs wearing out and needing replaced! Extremely common! We have them in the shop once or twice a week! Basically when you accelerate you will feel a skipping or hopping same as turning may hear tires chirp because it's locked basically! Any other questions just ask

Ok....that's what I will check then because that does sound like where the noise is coming from. Also....since reading your reply I've researched a bit more and it reminded me that on occasion when I make a left or right turn....I do feel a vibration which many posts have said that may be related to a bad clutch pack. So....onto checking out the rearend. Thanks so much!!
