The old trick to find exhaust issues is to put your hand over the tailpipe and block it while the engine is running. With a friend to help, you'd be able to hear exhaust leaking from the manifolds if that's the trouble.

For phasers, take your up-to-temperature engine, shut it off, and disconnect the plugs from the solenoids. Re-start the engine and listen. That will let you know if your phasers are borked... but they make a rather heavy knocking noise, not at all what you're describing.

Otherwise, grab a real long screwdriver or stick or extension (or even be fancy and get a Mechanic's Stethoscope) and listen to the engine.

What does unplugging them determine?
