It's more a matter of where you live, and how much care you put into it.
In the saltbelt almost all trucks will rust out. Just a matter of time.
12 years on your '05 - has been fairly good.
My last truck ('00) made it 12 years before coming through.
My current '04 is still good but it lived in New Mexico for several years and had no rust until it came to Ohio.

Bought my 06 new in Wi. Bit the bullet and had it Ziebarted. However, moved to MO in 2015 and no Ziebarts here-so will have to see as I can't get it touched up every year as when in WI. Hoping to get several more years before any rust pops up.
Yeah 12 years.. I've had it 5 months LOL..
But that's life here in New England and well I saw it when I bought it...
for the record StephenG you did not forget after your post I edited that bit in to see more perspective. If I saw one happen in Florida I'd think they were a beach dwelling truck...

My jeep never rusted one bit. It was a 2000 Sahara. Now I have seen some rust buckets in the acreage, But I believe that is in most part due to the pine needles and Tree leafs clogging up the channels for water to drain. Which would help explain the beach thing. Theres ALWAYS a breeze by the beach and really not to many Big overhanging trees. So leafs probably don't jam up the rain channels of vehicles.
Really haven't seen to many vehicles by the sea with rust either. I thought you would, but not. My truck now, and the jeep I had for several years see's the beach at least once a week. I go every Wednesday. In fact just got home now

Is it legal to talk here about a Chevy?
I live in northern New England. Up here they dump enormous amounts of salt on the roads all winter, every winter. I had a 1977 3/4 ton Chevy PU that rusted out several times. I kept patching it up with body parts from the auto parts store. I would coat the inside of the replacement panel with roofing tar/cement and pop rivet the piece on over the rust with s/s rivets. Then I would paint the panel black. I kept this truck going for many, many years. When the frame rusted out for the second time my mechanic told me to never bring the truck back into his shop again.
But this was a TRUCK. I used it and abused it. I really did not care what it looked like. When the bed rusted out I made a flat bed for it with the help of a local welding shop.
Now I have a really nice red 2007 F150 that I want to keep looking good. I am older now (74) and have settled down a bit. I take the trash to the dump and sweep out the bed when I am done.

I have a jar with a mixture of STP (because it's really sticky) and 90 weight gear oil (because it's so thick) and an old paint brush. I smear this stuff on any place that looks like it might rust. Like the inner side of rocker panels and the bottom of doors. I also get the whole underside of the truck waxed every fall. This is probably not as good as the old oil undercoat that's illegal now but I get it done anyway. At my age I don't want to have to buy another truck. And I REALLY like this one.
