Lockouts lock the phaser in full advanced or full retard position, depending on your choice. By locking them out you can stop the noise from the veins of the phaser from clacking, and ticking. Many members have reported zero difference in how the truck runs with lockouts compared to stock, while also reporting a silent phaser operation. The cam phaser is what causes the brunt of the annoying "diesel" knock, tick.
The veins are the large open area pictured. The lockouts go on either side of the plate in the vein.

Well after 2 days the truck is done! It runs great, sounds great and is throwing no codes. What a royal pain in the though. I ended up having one phaser that was completely sprung, both timing chain tensioner seals were blown, and both timing chain slides were broke. WTF was Ford thinking putting plastic inside a motor for? Hello, metal timing chain running on something that looks like a kids toy, come on. Any way at least my phasers will never go bad again and my truck will be sold at the next sign of timing chain rattle on start up. I would like to give props to Livernois though on a great idea and product for the phaser lock outs and programmer.

When I changed out my timing hardware. My guides where in good shape. Just some wear at 150k my tensioners seals were blown right chain was slack badly when opened it up . No more ticking. And added an electric oil pressure gauge in cab its running at 30 psi HOT IDLE. And between 50 and 60 when driving..... I feel it all depends how long you let it tick .. knock for wear out stuff very quickly.. usually the tensioned seals r the culprit very bad design seal the updated seals r tons better.

Other than the tensioner seals, have they updated anything else on the newer motors? I am pretty leary of buying another Ford product after this deal. I think we all would like to get more than 100,000 miles out of a motor without doing major repairs.

Cost me $429+shipping for the lockouts and programmer from Livernois, $150 for the timing chain kit, $40 for new phaser bolts, and $136 for the gasket kits for the timing and valve covers.
