Burn Burn Burn
Hey Everyone,
Writing in today to start a "New" discussion on oil consumption with a 2008 5.4 (XLT, SC, 4x4). Currently the odometer is reading just shy of 62k miles (bought the truck with 31 a year and a half ago) and I am running into issues with oil burn/consumption. I am currently running 10W40 Mobil1 Full Synthetic in the truck in an attempt to mitigate the "unnecessary oil consumption issues" that I was having with the 5W20, however, the issue has not been remediated as I am still burning 1 quart per 1k miles. I ask please with complete respect, do not tell me that running heavier weight oil is bad for the truck or that FS oil is unnecessary as I have done my homework on all of these aforementioned "argument points" and I am in no way looking to start a viscosity/oil type war. With all of this in mind, has anyone experiencing this issue found a cure that does not require a teardown and/or thousands of dollars? Thank you, Any help is greatly appreciated.
P.S.
This is my second Triton (ran an 2004.5 with the 4.6) that I had very similar symptoms with...

Some engines simply use more oil than others. If it's running fine and isn't smoking drive on and get in a habit of checking your oil at fillups. I don't think swapping brands, weights, or types will help.

Bought an 05 F150 about 10 years ago with 9K on the clock. STX SCab 4.6. Ran 5/20 full syn since the day I bought it. Lost about 3+ qts between intervals. I change at 5k. The only thing that seemed to help was switching to conventional. Even then the loss was cut by about half. Did some digging and the research I found was people said it was normal to use oil and some even went as far to say they'd be more concerned if it didn't use oil. A few had also made comment about synthetic oil being more "slippery" than conventional, meaning it would get by the rings easier. Personally I thought it was a crock but I was getting the results they described. No smoke, no leaks, etc. Totaled that truck after seven faithful years of service (not at fault).
Now I have an 05 SCrew 4x4 5.4. Run 5/20 synblend since day 1 and my loss it about 1.5-2 qts between intervals. I will not be putting conventional in my 3V motor to see if it duplicates my 4.6. My financial situation has greatly improved since then and the 5.4 is too picky to be gambling with. I live with it and have accepted that it's just the norm for triton engines. I bet a lot of other people would be surprised to learn that there other manufacturers burn oil too. Not many people look at their dipstick before pulling the oil plug on a change.

To the OP, I might be concerned with 1 Qt per 1K miles. Are you not leaking anywhere? On a positive note, your engine has a continuing influx of new, fresh oil...
I have been driving for almost 50 years and have never had a vehicle, car or truck that did not use oil. I consider 1 qt per 2000 miles average. I use synthetic exclusively on my vehicles, except when I have to add toward the end of an oil change cycle because I have some dino I want to use up. I would not worry about it. My 05 screw is using abt 1 qt per 2k at the moment. It is new to me as of this past summer when I bought it.
