Blacking out my emblems
Well gents through trial and error, along with the research that I should have done first my emblems are blacked out. Thanks to a post I used VHT nite-shades. Just finished them this morning. I think that I'm going to clear coat them once they are dry. To anyone thinking of blacking out their truck and it is the new body style don't use the hair dryer trick. Yup I'm an idiot, but hey it was only a $50 mistake. No junk yards around me had the Ford grill emblem so I had to get it from Ford. Anyway these are the steps that I took:
Supplies: VHT nite-shades, heat gun(hair dryer), adhesive remover, windex, plastic scraper (soft plastic), 3M double-sided tape or emblem adhesive, and if you want a clear gloss to finish them off.
1. I removed the emblems using fishing line (as a saw) and a heat gun(hair dryer will do). Becareful with the heat you don't want your emblems to bubble all of them on the truck are laminated. Start with a little heat saw with the fishing line, you'll hit the pegs (2 on the F150 and 3 on the Ford) pretty quick. Use the scraper or a paint stick to help pry back the emblem and slide the fishing line behind the peg and keep sawing.
2. Once they were off I removed the rest of the double sided tape from my truck with a little heat, the adhesive remover, scraper or finger nails(care gets hot) and a rag. I used a razor blade on the back of the emblems.
3. I cleaned them up with soap and water then finished them off with some windex.
4. Once they dried I mounted them in some styrofoam so they would lie flat, which is important to help keep the nite-shades from running.
5. Then I started to apply in very light thin coats the nite-shades. I would wait a few minutes between coats. Becareful it is watery so light coats is the way to go!!
6. To re-attach them to your truck just use emblem adhesive or 3M double sided tape(the thicker stuff like what you removed).
I'll try and post some pics of the finished product. This is my first how to post so if you need more info just ask, I will try and explain as best as I can.

If your truck is the older body style 04 with the smaller ford emblem on the right side of the tailgate vice the center like mine, just google blackout ford emblem and you will see how to do it. Then just go to your local auto parts store and get the matching paint.
