So far ... the reports are showing that the new RAM 1500 with the 3.0L V6 diesel will get better than 21MPG city and they are crossing their fingers for 30MPG highway (probably more like 27 or 28, I'd guess). I can't believe it would take too awful long to offset the cost of the diesel engine / diesel fuel with those kind of numbers. You could buy a Jeep Liberty with a diesel in the U.S. for a couple of years ... but as Americans, we have some strange love affair with the super-refined petro. Certainly the EPA, the oil companies and the manufacturers are factors in the limited availability of diesel-powered vehicles in the US ... but consumer demand has a great deal to do with it as well. FINALLY, the "green" movement is recognizing that diesel is the more sustainable way to go and we are seeing more and more acknowledgement of the benefits of diesel. My wife's Honda CRV is just about paid-off and I have started to look at the current small SUV market again. I'd love to buy her the Audi SUV with the TDI in it ... but $60K ... no thanks. The VW Toureg is at the top of my list right now (but even it is $50K...yikes...maybe not). Personally, I think the exorbitant price differential for the diesels is a bit of a scam.
Agreed, I mean the Cherokee diesel jeeps, not the liberty.
I would love for ford to push one out the door
