Default Before I Buy!!

Hello everybody. Im in the market for a used pickup for ~15K. After a few days of searching, Ive found an 08 F150 that I am interested in. Im not too familiar with Fords, so I am looking to you all to hopefully fill me and double check my potential purchase before I overpay or overlook an important factor.

Here is a link to the truck I am looking at: http://www.olgermotors.com/2008_Ford..._256681995.veh

Thank in advance for all your help and insight.

Look underneath for mud/rust. There are better deals to be had. I paid 13.2 for my 4x4 Scab 2005 fully loaded lariat w/101k on it in March. Original owner, old man, never been off road.

Price seems maybe a little high but if it's clean then I would make an offer on it

The dealership was asking $19995 for my 08 with 43k on it screw 4x4

Thanks for all the replies.

Anything I should know about maintenance and such? Big component or mechanical problems I should look for? Is under body rush a big deal with these?

Edit: This may be a better buy

looks like a better deal.

these trucks actually seem fairly rust resistant.....of course the odd truck of any kind could get a bad batch of metal, but on the whole, these seem pretty good about it.

i'll contribute to both the deal and rust discussions.....I drive an '04, cost 4500 bucks in October 2013 at 79K miles in pretty good condition, one owner, always looked after well. I don't know where you live but I can see the atlantic out my window and salt is used in winter, so rust, especially underneath, is a big deal on any truck here. the truck's holding up well in that regard...I notice it takes a while to rust once metal is exposed, and rusts slowly after. surface rust goes far before any actual rot appears. other 04-08 f-150s I've seen back that up. mine has good amounts of surface rust now (100K on the dot) but very minor rot, and it's progressing quite slowly despite that this is a work truck that's very rarely washed outside and never underneath.

on the mechanical side......other than the 5.4 being known for a few fairly benign issues, the only big thing is the fuel pump driver module (fpdm) tends to short out due to corrosion and that will strand the truck. not a terribly expensive repair. info is easy to find on both those items if you need it. other than that, they're a pretty solid reliable truck. I have the 4.6 and I trust the whole drivetrain to go on trouble free for many more miles.

I like that the first one has the 4.6 and would try and get them down on price on that one. Both are priced high though. Fully loaded fx4/lariat trucks are going for less then those.

Any reason to go with the 4.6 over the 5.4? Everything Ive read points to the 5.4 being just as reliable with the same MPG, just more power.

A lot of people have there own opinions but more people have problems with the 5.4's then the 4.6's. I personally have a 2004 fx4 with the 5.4 which is the worst of them all so I don't have much room to talk but in my defiance I bought it without asking the question or doing research like yourself. Which I give your props for! I havn't had any problems with mine though and I have owned it for almost 2 years but my truck has about 18,000 on a new motor because the old one gernaded and had to be replaced before I purchased it. The 5.4's can be reliable though and many people have gotten 200,000 trouble free miles out of them, they just seem too be more hit or miss. If I were you I would read up on cam phaser noise and listen to some bad motors before you buy so you know what to listen for when you look at the trucks. The best years were 2007-2008 in this body style with 2004 being the worst of them all. Also ask when the spark plugs have been changed last and if they have no clue make them change them before you buy because that is quite the project to accomplish if they start breaking. If you don't know what I am talking about do some research on that too.

Also to put the price in perspective I bought mine for $13,500 but it is a FX4 with leather seats, center console, sun roof, pretty much everything but heated seats. The ones you are looking at are xlt trucks with minor options which makes them less appealing when trying to sell and they are asking more money.

Not saying you shouldn't by a 5.4 just want to make sure you are getting one that has been taken good care of! I love my truck and for the money it has been great so far and I plan on keeping it for a long time! When/if you get one post up some pictures and future mods for it!
