Default Bed Extender compatibility

So my 05 lariat SCREW does not have a bed extender, but I believe it did at one time. It has the 3 holes on each side and the grommets installed. It does not have the rotating pins, so I would need to grab those. I saw somewhere that you could use ford explorer door latch bolts as a cheap alternative? I've been trying to source one locally, but can't seem to find one for the 04+ trucks. Would one fit from the older body style, or did they change it up?

I've seen the amp research ones on Ebay, but they appear to need to be strapped to the tailgate, rather than utilizing the spring loaded locking pins. Anyone have any experience with these? It looks like a new one from Tasca is like $400 with hardware, and I'd rather not spend that kinda cash for something I will seldom use but would love to have. Let me know what you think, thanks!
