From the pic, it looks like a previous owner had already installed a splice connector to that black/pink striped wire, and never taped it off when they removed it. Bad; as it would have been a troubleshooting nightmare to find that wire shorted to ground if your reverse lights failed and blew a fuse.

Or, you made the splice, then removed it for a picture?

No, I wanted to be certain that was the correct wire so I made a small hole in the insulation to put my meter lead and checked the voltage with the truck running in reverse, drive, and neutral.

I have the same rear tailgate handle camera; works great as long as I don't have the tailgate down!

okay so I am about to purchase a new pioneer avh-380bt and a license plate backup camera. Ive heard from my buddies to just wire the power into the reverse lights and plug up the other yellow wire to the back of the unit and youre good to go, but now searching ive found mixed opinions of ppl saying the head unit needs to be wired to a truck wire that receives 12v only in reverse and ppl are talking about a green and yellow wire in the passenger kick panel. I thought thats what the reverse lights were for?

Just confused on which one to wire to

You should have a reverse sensing wire going to the screen, that tells the pioneer head unit the truck is in reverse and it should switch to rearcam view. For the camera, the only connections should be a 12v wire and a ground wire. You can take your 12v from the reverse wire at the taillight. Same for ground, at the taillight.

So the reverse sensing wire will be one of the wires in the harness that I will have to crimp to the scocshe kit?

Scosche Kit ? You shouldn't need any kit or module to hookup a camera ?

I know you said you're about to buy it, so you don't have it yet. Things will be much easier once you physically have it.

Is this the kit you're getting ?

If yes, ... you'll have that wire harness at the bottom right with the black connector. One of those wires is clearly labeled "Reverse Gear Signal Input" or something similar. Color: Violet/White. That's the wire you need to connect your reverse wire into, whether you find the truck's reverse wire in that bundle of wires at the door channel or all the way back at the taillight.

To make things easier on you. Use the wires embedded in the RCA cable to connect your reverse signal wire to the head unit. That's the 2 short red wires you see hanging out of the yellow RCA jacks in the picture. Extend and connect one end to the reverse wire at the bulb (taillight) and connect the other end to the violet/white in the back of the Head Unit.

As far as your camera goes, there are only 2 wires; one is 12V and the other is ground. A couple choices for where you can tap into:
- Taillight (Reverse Wire)
- Trailer Connector (Probe for a Ignition 12V wire)
