Default Another crank - no start problem

(2004 5.4 SuperCrew 4x4)

I jumped in it a couple of mornings ago and it cranked but didn't fire up. I have been noticing that it has been slow to fire up, most notably when it is warmed up (like when you go to start after getting gas etc.... and this leads me to suspect a fuel pump).

So far I replaced the fuel filter as it seemed like a cheap place to start. Just changed the crank sensor as it won't fire even with quick start. Still didn't fix the problem. Now I am thinking that there is something more sinister that has killed the spark. As a side note, the FPDM was replaced last year with a Dorman one so I kind of ruled that out as a problem. The spark plugs were done last summer and there are no codes (reading with a Diablosport programmer).

I was going to throw a fuel pump at it but when I had the filter off and turned the key it pumps fuel (for a second or two, so I assume it is supposed to shut off and not pump continuously).

No codes is the troubling part. Seems like a no spark issue should throw a code though, correct?

Anyone here think the fuel pump is the culprit? Strange it won't make a effort on quick start though.

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thx,

J

Problem solved! Along with everything else, I put a new battery in it and then a new starting motor as the old was just not swinging it over fast enough and it was getting on my nerves. Then I had the thing towed to my local shop where the mechanic with the help of his trusty analyzer ran down the problem. Turns out it was a bad ground to the PCM. (In my climate I'm not surprised - I live by the ocean and they spread a lot of salt on the roads around here in the winter as well). Anyway it took a bit of time to trace down the issue but it is up and running again. It might be worthy to note this fix for anybody with a similar issue. I wish I'd have thought of it and checked it first. Sometimes it seems like we (I?!) overthink things and the first impulse is to start throwing money at it. This is an example of the KISS principle I suppose (keep it simple , stupid).... Funny how one day it was fine and the next, nada.... I guess that's the way she goes sometimes Bubbles.
