Alternator Issues
2 Weeks ago my 2004 f-150 Lariat with 5.4 stated showing charging system error. Had battery and alternator tested, bad alternator. Replaced it today and now when I hook up battery lights and everything comes on and truck acts like it is trying to start (loud clicking from engine) without key in ignition. When I try and start it acts like the battery is drained. I'm feeling compelled to change cables between battery and alternator but not sure if I'm thinking in the right direction.
What did you replace it with? These trucks are picky about alternators. Box stores tend to have crappy voltage regulators and other cheap parts inside. Invest in a Motorcraft alt and save you some trouble.
I replaced it with a new (not rebuilt) one that reviewed well from Rockauto. I am going to check connectors and put a fresh battery in it today to erase that possibility. Then I will look at harness and have alternator tested. Any other suggestions.
Gentlemen, First thank you for your responses! Second, the battery was bad, can't feel too bad it was purchased in 2013. Now for honesty and transparency, I am an idiot. I bought the truck used and completely forgot it had an aftermarket remote start installed because I rarely use it. For those who haven't already figured this out, a remote start will try and start the truck when the battery is reconnected to insure settings are correct. Once I figured it out on my own, I noticed the big freaking sticker next to the battery compartment explaining such. Grrr. Oh Well, good news is we hit the camping trail this weekend!
Glad you got her going anyway though.
Cheers
