Default Actual Transmission Failure?

Sons 2007 5.4 Lariat. Yesterday says there was a prominent, noticeable "clunk", now at appx. 30mph the drivetrain "disconnects" and the RPM's just fly up. M1, M2, M3 are fine but that's to be expected.

No check engine light, won't have it until tomorrow to pull codes.

What sort of failure happens with a "clunk" and that's all she wrote? Is there anything outside the trans as possible options (only the diff comes to mind but I don't see how).

Phone calls to two "recommended" transmission shops both have said sight unseen "yeah its blown, needs a rebuild/reman".

Anything I could check before just dumping it on craigslist? Son isn't gonna put in a trans, was planning on selling this weekend because baby coming and they need more room. Murphy's Law and all that.

Thanks...
