Default Ac not blowing help please

Ok here's what I know I have a 2006 f-150 xlt 4.6l non climate control the ac started acting up I would get in the truck and the ac would blow but not cold I would mess with it turn the ac on and off and turn it from vents to floor to mix then it would kick on and blow ice cold and not have problem for a week at a time then it would happen and mess with it and I would work fine it's been on and off like that for 2 weeks and finally tonight it jut wouldn't kick on I checked to see of the compressor is kicking on and it was not engaging. Is there any common sensors that go bad on theses trucks? I'm not sure about the freon level I don't have any gauges to check it with (It might be time to get some) any advice is greatly apprishated

it sounds like the blend door actuator is acting up. Mind did something like that But I'm far from an a/c person

From the OP's description along with past threads on this subject, I second jrmonhi's thoughts.

No, good point, but it does blend warm air with the cold. In re-reading the post, I see it mentions that the compressor is not working properly.

The clutch may not be operating if the system is not fully pressurized, or thinks it is not. I do think there's a pressure switch in the system. The fact that it blows cool at times leads me to think the system has enough freon, and therefore has pressure. I'd refrain from buying one of those "self install" freon kits until the system is checked out using guages that measure the low and high pressure circuits. Most AC shops will do a system check for free.

I have the auto climate control and wish I had the regular dials. It always does odd things dam electronics, but I have to say the self test function is kinda nice

Ok brining new life to this because I have gotten to mess with my truck more heres what I have my ac still clicks in and out as it pleases I got a can of freon with a gauge for the low side I hooked it in and the gauge read 42ish im assuming it's psi not clearly marked on the gauge, on the gauge it reads 45 is max full before going into the yellow warning section, and on the bottle it says for ambient temperature 95-105 (it was 100 put) it should be 45-55 psi so I went ahead and let the system take some freon to see what would happen and it took the hole can and went to 43 I let it cycle and I added the hole can over a 10 min period. That didn't quite seem right but it was blowing really cold then I turned it down to let it cycle and let my truck run for another 10-20 min and I checked on it and te clutch was not engaged... Im confused sence the system shows full, would it be more likely a switch, like the cycle switch high pressure switch (don't have a gauge for the high pressure side so I didn't get to read that side) or could the clutch on the compressor be failing the intermittent of it has me baffled I'm use to when something brakes it just brakes.
