Ford thought the same thing. Amazing how using the prescribed oil makes it work better.

Funny. The 5.4 in Brazil and Australia don't have phaser issues. They use 5w30.

And that's also why FordTechMakuloco recommends using 5W30.

I’ve seen a phaser issue that wasn't a result of a blown tensioner. Due to the outrageous number of trucks sold here vs elsewhere, it’s no wonder we “don’t hear” about issues from Brazil or Australia on this board...

So does FCA, but it doesn’t keep the HEMI quiet (junk lifters and cams) anywhere near as well as 5w-30 does.

All automakers care about is your cash and meeting CAFE to keep cash in their pockets. They’d fill your engine with water and look the other way if they could get away with it!

Completely irrelevant to the poster a few posts up who put in the recommended oil, and saw a seemingly drastic improvement in driveability.

I drove to Walmart in truck 12mpg after reset of mpg tracker, after oil change on way home 20mpg. Truck no longer sounds like Diesel engine, all pep in motor has returned.

I feel like either I’m setting my self up for a hard fall or I’ve fixed my truck. Meaning always motocraft and 5/20 very 3k.

Can anyone weigh in?
There is literally NO WAY you went from 12 to 20 unless you have a programmer and changed tire sizes/ gear sizes, or changed out the flat tire you were riding on. There is very little difference between 20W and 30W oils and most certainly will not net you an 8mpg increase by doing so. The K&N filter will have little to no effect on your mpg... tried that, didn't work. Went with a cold air Volant intake system, guess what? Same thing but sounded good.

I'm about to try the 5w-30 and see what it does. I don't feel like it will be a drastic effect but I do know there are some good benefits from running the 30W oils vs the 20. However, I realize Ford calls for 5w-20 and I've run that since ownership. truck now has 167K miles and I've had to replace the timing at 147ish. Though, I don't think my phasers where bad at the time but I did have the rattle at start. My VCT died at 110K miles all while running 5w-20.

Hopefully this won't turn into a battle of oil weights but stating something like that is ridiculous--imo. Not trying to be jerk at all but I find it very hard to believe with only 5 posts on the forum.

One of the reason for the 5w20 specification is because in VCT systems, not only is the oil used for lubrication, it is also used as a hydraulic fluid. One of the problems with the wrong weight oil is that it can foam which will inject air into the hydraulic system. . . once you start getting air into hydraulics it will do fun things like when you have air in your brake lines. Motorcraft oil also has anti-foaming agents in it as well.

For what it's worth, in the Australian market and other places around the world, Ford recommended 10w30, and in the US 5w20 is recommended, mainly to meet CAFE standards.
