UPDATE.

I ended up ordering a reman'ed ATK engine from ROCKAUTO for roughly $3600 with a core charge of $560 that I received full credit when I sent the engine back. It had the oil pan and front cover already installed so no need to reuse mine. I just had to use all my upper components. My engine installer charged me $1250 for the install.
So far 4000 miles later with no issues except for a crossover gasket that he should've installed but didn't charge me for. The only disappointment would be when I changed my oil, at 600 miles, the oil bolt seemed cross threaded but was ok. The oil pan was slightly dented up. I would've had him change it out but the new engine was still sitting in the crate and no one noticed.
BTW I phoned Ford and for the $5XXX the quoted me just for the engine alone, it was also a reman'ed one.

Thanks for the update! Does it run like new? Sound?

Is it safe to assume most of the rebuilt motors you guys listed have the cam phaser problems updated/fixed already?

Yes it runs like it did when new. I put new stock Walker cats on it as well. I can't tell a difference in the sound(just sounds like a Ford V8) but when I was leaving work one day a buddy of mine asked me if I had a different exhaust.
And yes they rebuild the whole engine with updated parts(same guts as Sony just has the Sabra name) old SNL joke.

Just need some suggestion on a rebuilt replacement. Not looking for HI-PO options. Not looking for the $6000 Jasper engine either. If anyone has replaced theirs, who they used and what they paid. Looking for UNDER $3000. Used would be an option but most of the used engines I've seen they want almost as much as a reman'ed one.

I just had one done. $4986 for longblock assembly as stated on invoice. total quote was $7400. $800 more if I kept my old motor.

You validated my "leave it until further notice" with the cam-phaser "tick" I had for over a year.

I plan on keeping the truck so throwing a used engine in and "dumping" it isn't really an option. I've owned a lot of fords( 3 mustangs 2 explorers 4 f150s) and after I fix this one this will be the last. I hope ford is reading these problem threads on this 5.4.

Me too buddy and I am SOOO THRU with ford I'll give you a quick rundown. Bought my F-150 FX4 new with 11 miles. Rear final drive failed at 35+K RIGHT ON THE EDGE OF WARRANTY. They fixed that. 77+K tranny failed replace with REMAN. MY dime. The kicker to that is the tranny failed with THE TECH ROADTESTING AN ALIGNMENT after I put new tires. Motor starts it tick tick **** sometime in the 90some+K range and FAILED AT 107+K. Have REMAN longblock installed just got truck back.

These reman assemblies may have the initial defects fixed but with my maintenance habits there was no reason at all for these parts to completely fail. No more ford anything being bought in my lifetime.

I feel your pain. We don't deserve this particularly buying new off the lot.

Default these guys are great

Check out this site. 3 yr unlimited mileage nationwide no fault warranty,

https://www.tristarengines.com/catal...l-3valve-ford/

If this isn't the right engine, you can do a lookup. The only thing you need to do for warranty is replace the oil cooler.

I've bought two transmissions for two cars from these guys and never had an issue. A friend who owns a shop uses these guys and swears by them. He had one customer who purchased an engine, then had a warranty claim. Customer hit a rock, punched a hole in the oil pan and kept going until the engine seized. Tri Star shipped a new engine and paid $75/hour for labor. Replacement engine had full warranty.

They ship by freight, and if I remember, core return is prepaid.

Well after roughly 8000 miles nothing bad to report on the ATK replacement. I have developed a small power steering leak though. I'll have to address that soon, nothing I feel when driving yet. I'm sure I'll get flamed from the guys that "I've got 300k on mine and haven't any issues with my 5.4" but a coworker on mine was asking me about Ford trucks and what I thought about the ecoboost. I told him just stay away from 5.4 and do your research on the ecoboost before buying. I also told him I've got a love/hate relationship with mine. Good luck to all who are having engine issues, Lord knows I've had mine. Lol.

Great advice and sorry for your issues. So far the repairs made due to abject failure even with scheduled maint. and above scheduled (oil changes every 3k not 5k) have held that dealer I had has some good techs. They work slow and are not cheap but so far the rear axle they rebuilt in 07 on my 04 fx4 has held as well as the reman tranny in 10. the engine I put I just got back 7 days ago is quiet i'm sure it'll be ok. If it would be me I'd tell your buddy to look at Toyota or Ram also. I think an eco boost is already shaking out to be more than a handful for lots of people. Maybe the warranty is better these days but I don't care if ford motor company wants to toss my salad I am though with them LOL

Well my 08 FX4x4 just joined the ate the phaser and creamed the engine club. Fords response was less then underwhelming, not our problem, 67k is out of warranty we aren't in the business of fixing your truck with our engineering problem. My mech is talking 8k for a reman long block. Has anyone gotten any satisfaction from Ford on this problem? MPW

Get a new mechanic. You could do a Coyote swap for less than that!

Also you have to understand that not all Of these trucks suffer the fate yours did. My 06 is at 193k and still quiet as when new. Many others out there with higher miles.
