I am new to the forum, and read about tapping, and knocking etc. My 05,XLT, 4X4 sounds like a hydraulic lifter collapsed, and the push rod is knocking. Is type of noise common with the 5.4?

 

ya it is. mine kinda sounds like a real quiet diesel.

 

Hopefully the right guy will pick up and answer better. Any related engine missing or other problems. Have heard mentioned of the cam phasers making noise. All new to me, my little 4.2 don't have them. Good luck!

 

Yeah it is pretty common and can be fixed for a couple grand, unless it's under warranty. If in fact it is the cam phasers, that is.

 

I'm really liking my 4.2 liter too.

 

check out ford service bulletin 06-9-11. Loud ticking noise, stuck lash adjuster!
If you can isolate the noise to left or right valve cover, this is a possible. If the noise is at 750-1000 rpm only, posiible cam phasers.

 

i have a 2007 fx4 with 50000 km and knocks or ticks when its warm

This is not normal, go to a Ford dealer for diagnosis. Sounds like possible
cam phasers.

Now his on the tube is not normal and is in fact louder than most.

However tho,this question has been asked,and i will answer again,lol.I have looked into the sound,have spoken to 2 stealer ships,3 auto shops,and a ford tech at ford itself after being on hold for at least 2hours.This sound is normal within certain decibels.All came back telling me that its normal as long as it doesn't get any louder.Now yes for a couple grand,you could fix it,and even then its not guaranteed to never come back again.So to get it fixed,thats a personal call.Good luck on this and keep us informed on what your plans are.
