Default 5.4 help

04 FX4.
5.4
993xx miles
I Have a noise not sure what it is, it sounds like metal tapping metal. A buddy of mine said it was just the a/c pump, its not a problem. it stays with the rpms(rev up noise gos faster...) im a lil worried.

I do have a check light, P0316,misfire. that just showed up today. Its been misfiring for about a week, but only at idle.

Any advice would be greatful.

Thanks for your time.

Zak

Have the plugs been changed yet? if not that's probably the misfire. The Phaser noise sounds like a quiet diesel at idle and usually goes away above 1000 rpm unless there totally gone. My truck has had the noise for over 50k miles and runs fine. there is also and issue with the timing chain tensioner that acn cause a scraping sound if you use the search function on the forum you can learn more than you want to know.

Good luck!

The noise is a bit loud at idle, it wasn't making the sound until around about 2 weeks ago. Started quite and its just getting louder.. the last owners said they changed the plugs already. Maybe a coil?

I have a weird noise as well. I'm trying to figure out if it is the cam phazer as well. Only 36k on it and when I'm accelerating hard (not flooring it) right when the engine wants to shift there is a sputtering sound coming from the engine. Any ideas as to this maybe being the cam phaser? (FINGERS CROSSED IT ISNT!!!)

My check engine light is not on like Whippled. For the record when i purchased this truck with 20k on her, she did make a little bit of this noise but every once in a long while. Now it seems happening more frequently.

I posted yesterday I believe whe one had a similar question about the noise you describe.
Mine began the same way, like a lifter at first & got louder, due to work I had no time to check it out, then about or just after a few weeks going to work, #3 spark plug blew out breaking my coil as well on my 5.4
Do a search on "ford 5.4 spark plug blow out" & you will begin to get the pic, then there are threads here to add & are very helpful as well.. I just wish I had came here first or had read about it previously then I would have made the time to find out what was causing that noise sooner.. lol, it is what it is..

Hopefully this is not your issue with your truck, but dang sure is looking into before instead of after..
Also you mentioned the "previous owners stated they had recently changed the plugs"/
You believed this or did you check it out for yourself to verify they did?? Then did they do it or have it done at a dealer??
I would do some looking into this "before" it happens or becomes worst.
