Default 5.4 engine build

Does anyone have a cam and/or head work on their 5.4? Ive heard a couple times that with a cam, some head work, exhaust, intake, and tune that these 3v 5.4's crank out 400rwhp. Any truth to it? Would it even be worth it to install only a cam and tune it? just curious, since i should be getting several thousand back on taxes next year

It'd probably be worth it to just go forced induction. Remember you'll need to lock out the VCT system to put a fat cam in it.

i could go forced induction, but i really dont want to spend $5000 when i could spend roughly $2000 and have all motor power. plus a little lope would be nice

Forced induction always makes for a better driving car than N/A power. If you go with big lopey cams then you have to deal with cam surge, loss of low end torque etc. I've had a built N/A EFI car and in the future I'd only go forced induction.

I think you would need extensive head work if not aftermarket heads. That would be about 450-500 flywheel hp depending upon drivetrain loss. At 330 cubes thats a pretty damn good hp/cube ratio.

thats possible with anything you do.

i wouldnt go get some crazy lope cam, most cams for these trucks retain a near stock idle. many are designed for low end and mid range power. Plus, doing a proper top end build shouldnt hurt the lower end as much as say jamming more air pressure into the engine from forced induction, although a friend of mine has a 00 silverado with a 230,000 mile supercharged 5.3 and it still runs strong.

And what price options are out there for forced induction anyways? I havent seen much thats less than $5000 that will get me the forced induction and my truck on the road

S/C are restricting. If you are looking for REAL POWER, Turbo's and nothing else! And you can put a system on yourself for around $3500, and thats for a top of the line TurboByGarrett turbo (thats what I was planning on putting in the truck).

-Turbo (& Turbo install kit)
-Larger Injectors
-Piping
-Tuner to allow for boost
-BOV
-WG
-Intercooler (optional)
-Wieband Boost meter

Might be leavin a few things out, but nothin major. Just make sure you don't push more than 8lbs of boost. The transmissions are only capable of handling 10psi (stock), and when it shifts, it throws 2+psi during the shift, so 8 is your max or you'll blow the trans right out the driveway.
