Thats what I was quoted, it definitely won't be less than that but we'll see on Friday when I get it back. But from what he and I talked about, its the full kit (chains, guides, tensioners, phasers, etc) and a new pump also. I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up around $2500 in the end, but thats a lot better than the $5500 the ford dealership quoted me right up the street from him.
A friend at work had the Ford dealer replace the short block for $3200, labor included, in his '05. He's now got 240k on the truck, 100k on the engine.
OP: Nearly 200k isn't terrible on the engine, assuming it's in good shape other than the timing components... but a new engine is enticing. If the rest of the truck is clapped out, I'd have a good non-dealer mechanic do the timing components with Ford parts, saving on labor/parts, and run it. Save your money for a new transmission, which is probably more likely to go down than the shortblock.

I'll keep calling around. I bought this truck with 90k with no intentions of getting less than 100,000 out of it. If 3k gets me 3 more years, I'm good with that.

I'd drop mine off for $2500 today. I'd buy the high flow oil pump, injectors and vct solenoids for them to install as well.

Interesting turn of events. Had it towed to a local mechanic and he called about 2 hours later. Said motor had almost no oil in it. He basically flushed the motor then added oil, new filter, new plugs and 1 coil pack. Motor has about 60 miles on it and its running like a sewing machine. It had been about 6k since a change.
He stressed the importance of oil changes every 3k with this particular motor.
I'm checking oil weekly for the next few months to see if we are burning oil.

I say use a quality Dexos-II oil and take a sample from your engine at 3,000 miles and send to Blackstone to know exactly what is happening. To know exactly what wear metals are present, to know exactly how the oil is holding up. About $25 but you will have facts, not conjecture.
Everyone really should check oil every tank of gas.

When I was in high school, I worked at a local garage and one thing that stuck with me was him saying oil changes at 3k was super conservative. He ran his cars 5-7k before an oil change. That has always stuck with me and I pretty much followed that since then.
I feel a bit embarrassed that I allowed my truck to almost burn up because I hadn't checked oil levels. Lesson learned and you can bet I'll be checking those levels now.

I'm still a little confused about 2 Ford Dealerships who missed this. They both were talking new motors. Maybe I caught them both on an off day. We are all human. I appreciate the input for you guys. Great place for information.

I seem to find a common thread with Ford dealerships recommending a new engine when perhaps that is not needed...
