5.4 with 188,000 miles - overhaul question
My 06 f150 with the v5.4 is in need of a timing overhaul (phasers, tensioners, guided and other components). At 188,000 miles, 2 dealerships and a third party mechanic have advised I should start looking for a new motor as opposed to overhauling this one. This news caught me by surprise.
Does this sound right with 188,000 miles or are they jumping the gun on a motor swap? I just didn't think 188,000 was too terribly many miles.

Think about it ... timing job with labor will be $2500 depending on what other components you are talking about. with almost 200K on your motor who knows what else could break after that. Re-man is about $4K not counting labor.. How long are you planning on keeping the truck ?

I planned on running the truck for at least 2 more years. My last f150 lasted 240k before I traded it in. I was hoping to get 250k out of this one.
dealership quoted me $4500 for repairs.

$4500 is a new motor, up to you but, a mom and pop shop that knows the 5.4 3V would do the timing job a lot cheaper.

all that aside - is 188,000 too many miles to repair?

Wow... $2000 for parts? what a sham 188K miles on a well maintained 5.4 3V is ok.. not sure what the rest of your truck looks like. Question is ... is $4500 worth to drive your truck another 50K miles, that's if nothing else craps out.

I just dropped my 2008 off with 186k miles on it to get the full timing chain job done yesterday. After talking with my mechanic I figure I can get another few years out of it as long as nothing major happens. I've had good luck with my engine and haven't had any issues until I started to hear the timing chain. ~$2200 out the door sounds like a better idea to me right now than a ~$350 truck payment, but I'm also a 24 year old who just got out of college.

Thats what I was quoted, it definitely won't be less than that but we'll see on Friday when I get it back. But from what he and I talked about, its the full kit (chains, guides, tensioners, phasers, etc) and a new pump also. I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up around $2500 in the end, but thats a lot better than the $5500 the ford dealership quoted me right up the street from him.
