Default 4x4 popping?

Ok so today i went to look for some fishing spots, found one and reversed my truck on a downward slope into some slight wet mud/sand. well when i went to take off the tires started spinning so i threw it into 4HI while still in Drive, when i accelerated, the rear tires spun but the front made a popping noise like 4x4 wasnt fully engaged, so i threw it in neutral and went to 4LO, and it didnt happen again, so i went back into 4HI just to see if it would do it again but nothing, any clues what happened?

Mine makes popping sounds most any time I'm turning the front wheels in 4H and there's any traction. I've always figured it was axle bind due to my 37". But mine isn't just one "pop", it increases in frequency the more you turn the wheels.

Two different symptoms same noise, one is the axle bind common on 4x4 the OP sounds like his front hubs were not engaging properly to begin with. When he shifted to low it probably locked up while shifting through neutral. Going back to high the hubs were already locked and did not unlock. If the tire are spinning at different speeds the hubs will not lock until the speeds are equalized.

So.. in a blatant attempt to thread hijack (sorry fx4_soldier).. how much "pop" do other folks with larger tires get? If I crank the wheel more than halfway while in 4H on a hard surface it'll pop nearly every tire rotation. 4L is even worse. I've always assumed this is normal behavior for 37" tires, but it would be nice to validate..

When the steering is cranked on a hard surface mine pops about every 6 to 8 inches of travel, or about 3 times per tire revolution. This is with 31 tires, I also happen to have a stiff rear gear that help to spin both back tires though. On concrete I can leave tracks from the front and rear tires without locking the transfer if that is any consideration though.
