Default 4X4 Not working

2005 F150.4X4 lights on dash come on when starting, but does nothing when put in 4hi or 4lo.It feels like the hubs are engaged. I have replaced the vacuum solenoid, but it didn't help.Any other ideas?

Shift motor on the transfer case. Read power to it first, if you own a meter and know how to use it.

Mine was the transfer case shift motor and the solenoid. In my case, a swift smack with a mallet to the transfer case motor knocked the internal mechanism loose and it shifts into 4x4 again.

True. I try to shift mine into 4x4 every week or so, with the hope it will be more likely to stay "loose" and not lock up again. 10K miles and has not been a problem again.

Thanks all I will try that. One thing while I was under the hood. There was an aluminum box on the drivers side front with a motor and 4 or 5 tubes attached and a wiring harness that has stamped 4X4 on it. Anyone know what its function is?
UPDATE Ok so I'm talking to a buddy with a GM.He tells me he had the same issue and he disconnected the battery,(reset) and that solved his problem, so I thought why not.Well I did that. After restarting I shift into 4 Hi, the light comes on the immediately goes out. I try 4 lo nothing. I turn off the key then turn it back on without stating the truck and put into neutral and shift into 4 lo. Start the engine and it works. I drive up and down the driveway a couple of times then stop and switch in to 4 hi, that also works fine. Go figure. I'm an HVAC tech so nothing really surprises me ..
