Default 4x4 not working

I am posting this for a friend so he has a idea what is wrong before he goes to fix it. He has a 05 king ranch and 4x4 pops in and out while drive but works fine in reverse also he said it sometimes makes a clicking sound while driving in 2wd. Does anyone have any info or has had this happen ?
not sure if it could be the diff or the hubs or something else.
Thanks any help would be great.

I'll bet when he puts it into 4WD the noise goes away too...Tell him he has a vacuum leak in his system...the 4X4 system use's an IWE Integrated Wheel End...hub assembly which is controlled by vacuum ...tell him that he needs vacuum to keep the IWE's dis-engauged...when he turns the selector switch to 4Hi it vents this vacuum and allows the hubs to engage. Have him check the IWE's them self's to ensure the vacuum lines are connected and secure...if all that checks good..tell him to replace the IWE Solenoid located on the firewall behind the battery. ..

Something as simple, and cheap, as cleaning your 4x4 module can do wonders for your truck!

Yea, you'd be surprised at the results it may yield for ya. My 4x4 used to give me trouble in NV but once I cleaned out all the sand and dirt, it worked again!

The IWE soleniod is under the hood on pass side rear. First thing I would look at are two check valves in the vaccum lines near that soleniod. They are a very common failure and cheap and easy. They should let air flow toward the engine but not back. If they fail you will hear the wheel ends partialy engage when accelerating. The more the load on the engine the less vaccum in the system and the springs in the IWEs over come to start engaging. Sounds like your IWEs may be toast as well. I recomend everybody with these trucks to inspect those check valves once in a while. Just take it out and blow threw it both ways. Should only let air threw one way. Way cheaper to catch them before they destroy the wheel ends
