Default 4x4 conversion?

I recently bought my 0'4 lariat from a dealer. The truck is 2WD but has a 4WD ****.The dealer had no idea if it had been converted or if it was just for show. It also has an on off switch above the ****. Is there any way to tell if its been converted?

Holy crap.....really? Neither you or a dealer know how to tell if a truck is 4x4 or 2wd?? First of all, you just spent a good chunk of money on a vehicle you are clueless about and you bought it from a dealer that is a dumb-***. May sound harsh, but common sense gets you a long way in life.

Didn't you recently chastise MGD about useless posts that aren't helpful? It may have been someone else, but I'm pretty sure it was you. It's like I tell my daughter when she's being gossipy; just because you can say something mean, that doesn't mean you should. Just something to think about.

To 04Lariat, there are several components for a 4wd system that could be left behind if the previous owner converted it to 2wd. The front differential, as stated, is a big one. Under the hood is the abs module. It will say 4×4 if the truck was converted. There could be some random vacuum lines that go no where also. Everything could have been replaced during a conversion, but that seems to be more expensive than just buying another truck.
The dash could have been replaced with a used one though, and the previous owner didn't want to leave a hole. It would awesome if the truck really was 4wd, and you got it for the price of a 2wd though!

Really? The guy bought a 4x4 and doesnt even know if it is a 4x4 or 2wd......I fail to see how my post was useless, if it was, contact a moderator and report it and see if they change it. Doubt they will.

The switch may be for anything really, since the wiring is in place for the 4x4 system (it is there on my Fx2 dash plugged into my "coin holder". It has a power, ground and another wire, so maybe the previous owner used a 4x4 switch as a power source for an auxillary component.

So, was this truck a 4x4, or was it once one and converted to a 4x2? Either way, a lot of work to get one (or the other).

Take pics of the front suspension/ axle area. That's the only real way to tell.
