Default 4WD question

I have 2005 F150 and sometimes when I'm in 4Hi when the tires spin I get a light grinding noise that can be heard in the cab. Most times though the 4 WD system works. Only does it like 20% of the time. Is this normal or is it possible my automatic actuators could be damaged from previous owner?

I wouldn't think you should hear any noise when the tires spin. Never heard anything like that with mine.

Need to preform a vacuum test of your 4WD system.

Front end levelled/lifted with spacers? That'll do it.

My front end isn't lifted; my truck has no mods, it's all still stock. I still have the old version of the actuator solenoid so I just ordered the new updated one with the hood over it to protect it from water.

More than likely an IWE is not completely engaged or is slipping out of engagement with torque on it (wheel spin). Once vacuum is released, the spring mechanism inside the IWE meshes the gears together and holds them together until vacuum is introduced again. That spring can corrode and break if the seal has been compromised.

How do I perform a vaccum test myself? I would rather do it myself then having to take it to my mechanic.

Find a local auto parts that will lend you a vacuum pump set and follow the instructions that come with the test set.. it's not hard.. hook up to fittings and read pressures and verify pressure holds

I had to change mine last year. It wouldn't engage or when it did it would get stuck in 4x4. The part was about $25 and only took 15 min. to replace
