The floor shifter is only on the lower trim levels. The floor shifter does manually shift into 4LO. Both types electricaly shift into 4HI (up to about 50 mph) via the shift motor on the transfer case. The front wheels are engaged by releasing vacuum and allowing the IWEs to seat their gears into the wheel hubs. No manual hubs exist on this generation of F-150s.

My 03 Super Duty had auto locking hubs that you could also lock manually for more strength if needed. I thought that was a nice feature.
