Default 4 wheel drive problem...

Hey Guys,

I have an 06 STX obviously with 4 wheel drive. I tested it out today as I just bought the truck a few days ago...only to find that the 4X4 shifter only moves back an inch or so into 4H. Not sure if it is suppossed to move further...but it didnt feel like it engaged anything. When I started to accelerate...it made a horrible banging noise. It also makes the same noise in 4L. Not sure what is wrong. Might take it back to the dealer unless its an easy fix...any ideas. I didn't think it could be a solenoid (which I have read recalls on) seeing as how I have to manually shift it and don't have the button option. Let me know what you guys think it might be?

Thanks!

Love the truck.

try putting transmission in neutral, before trying to go in 4L.

If it's only one bang, it's just moving into 4wd. Your owners manual will tell you that. Also, I'm hoping you were moving reasonably slow when you shifted into 4w (under 55 for high, don't remember for low anymore)

Yes, it was more than one bang. Every time I lift off the gas an then step on it again. An yes I was moving slowly. I wasn't moving at all the first time...and then then second time I tried I was rolling...under 10 MPH. Any ideas?

I'm afraid not then. I'm not terribly technical. Btw, you said something about being stuck in 4H? Am I reading that right?

If it's banging repeatedly and doesn't feel, like it's engaging, I'd guess that it's trying to but can't for whatever reason. I wouldn't know what the cause is though.

I have an XL with the floor shifter. It should just pop in to 4H, like it wants to be there. It moves about 2-3 inches from 2h to 4h. And you can shift into 4h under 55mph according to the manual. It sounds like something is getting in the way of the shifter or possibly loose linkage (if there is any linkage). My advice would be to take it back to where you bought it and have them fix it for you.

thanks for the advise guys. I am bringing it to the dealer this morning. They are hooking me up with a car while they fix my truck. I checked the vacum lines and they are good. The solenoid has been changed out (obviously not the original from 06). So I am now thinking that it has to be one of both of the hubs...either way its under warranty. I'll let you know what it was.

turns out a lot of the teeth were worn down on the hubs and it wouldn't hold 4 wheel due to this...so dealer is ordering me new hubs and then going to put them on beginning of week..so I should be good to go. I wonder why they got so beat up...maybe someone not putting it into 4 wheel properly?
