Default 2008 5.4 4x4 engine tick

I have read several posts about the VCT solenoid causing this ticking noise, but not so much on the 2008 engines. Mine developed the tick about 400 miles ago. I changed the oil the other day with 5W-20, and the noise is still there. My engine has 70,000 miles. Do you guys think I should change the VCT solenoid, and see if that fixes it, or are there other problems with the 2008 5.4L? Thanks.

I have a 2008 also. It has 50k on it and started having the noise also. It has bee at for for 3 1/2 weeks now. They replaced the vct and still ticks.
Then they replaced the timing chain and cam phasers. Still ticks. Should know this week what their next part slapping is.....

You can try replacing it and see if it fixes it.

Thanks for the reply. Anyone else have any ideas? I don't really want to change phasers out, and when I bought the pickup 6 months ago, the dealer said they changed out the timing sensor. Thanks for all your help.

my 08 has been diagnosed many times with the outcome being my injectors. i have also been told on the 08 engines all the phaser issues, manifold leaks and plug problems were fixed and the tick is from the loud noisy injectors.

Thanks for the reply. Are the injectors something that need fixed right away? Or can I wait on them. Do you think it would do any good to change the VCT solenoid in an 08?

I think every 04-08 f150 has this ticking noise. I hear it in all my buddies Fords. Even in the expedition with the 5.4. I don't think its a problem. The dealers want your money so they say its a problem.

the injectors are just made that way, there is nothing wrong with them, they are just loud as hell... im sure the ford engineer who decided on these injectors is jobless for choosing such an annoying injector!

dont know about the vct...

I had a similar issue with the guess being that my lifters were the issue. Dealer said before doing any work whatsoever, I should run some Lucas through it on my next oil change.

Picked some up and put it in today with the oil change. clicking/ticking sound went almost totally away. It used to be audible inside the cab and definitely under the hood when revving the engine. Now it is barely there.

Dealer said a slight noise is normal, so I guess it fixed it for about 10 bucks.

CORRECTION
leaking passenger exhaust manifold is my noise culprit, $700 repair, OUCH!
